About Vishu

Vishu is deeply rooted in the cultural and agricultural fabric of Kerala. While Onam is the harvest festival, Vishu represents the sowing season and the astrological New Year. It is a time when the days and nights are said to be of equal length. The word 'Vishu' in Sanskrit translates to 'equal'.

The celebration centers around looking at auspicious items early in the morning. This practice, known as Vishukkani, is believed to dictate the fortunes for the rest of the year. Families gather in joy, wear new traditional clothes (Kodi Mundu), burst firecrackers (Vishu Padakkam), and visit temples to offer prayers to Lord Krishna or Lord Vishnu.
